Why Do Aquarium Glass Panels Turn Green... While the Rest of the Tank Looks Clean?

You have just cleaned the glass of your aquarium. The water is crystal clear, the plants are thriving, and the fish are swimming peacefully through an immaculate aquascape.

Yet, just a few days later, tiny green spots have already started to reappear. At first they are almost invisible, but they gradually spread until they form a thin film across the glass. The most surprising part is that the driftwood, rocks and sometimes even the plants seem to be much less affected.



So why does the aquarium glass always seem to turn green first?


The answer is more interesting than you might think.


Contrary to a common misconception, the appearance of the first algae is not necessarily a sign of poor aquarium maintenance. In fact, it is almost inevitable. Algae are naturally present in the environment, and their spores enter the aquarium through the water, plants or decorative elements. As soon as conditions become favourable, they begin to grow.


The aquarium glass provides the perfect surface for this to happen. It is smooth, receives plenty of light and offers very little competition. For a microscopic alga, it is much like an untouched field bathed in sunlight.


By contrast, rocks, driftwood and other decorations are quickly colonised by a biofilm made up of bacteria, microorganisms and other forms of life invisible to the naked eye. This genuine "microfauna" already occupies part of the available space, naturally limiting the establishment of new algae.


Why Does One Glass Panel Turn Green Faster Than Another?


You may have noticed that the front glass often becomes covered with algae more quickly than the side panels, or that one side of the aquarium needs cleaning more often than the other.


This is rarely a coincidence.


A simple difference in light exposure is sometimes enough to explain why algae grow more readily on one surface than another. A nearby window, a slightly off-centre light fixture or a decoration casting a shadow can create small variations... and algae respond to them very quickly.


Like plants, algae use light to produce the energy they need.


However, one common misconception should be avoided: light is never the only factor involved.

To grow, algae also need nutrients dissolved in the water, particularly nitrates and phosphates. Their development is determined by the combination of several factors: light, nutrient availability, biological balance and competition with aquatic plants.


What About the Lighting?

For many years, aquariums were mainly equipped with T8 and later T5 fluorescent tubes. These lighting systems delivered excellent results, but their performance gradually changed over time. Even though they continued to operate, their light output slowly declined and their light characteristics evolved. This is why replacing fluorescent tubes at regular intervals was considered a normal part of aquarium maintenance.


Today, LED lighting has largely replaced fluorescent tubes.


Their light output remains far more stable over time, their lifespan is significantly longer, and many models allow precise adjustment of both light intensity and photoperiod. This makes it easier to match the lighting to the actual needs of aquatic plants without providing more energy than necessary.


Does this mean that an LED light fixture prevents algae from appearing?


Not at all.


Algae do not distinguish between a fluorescent tube and an LED. They simply take advantage of favourable conditions. However, a modern lighting system that is properly sized and correctly adjusted gives you better control over one of the key factors that influence the balance of an aquarium. It is a valuable tool... but never a miracle solution.


Are Algae Really the Aquarist's Enemy?


When the first green spots appear, the natural reaction is often to want to get rid of them as quickly as possible.


Yet in a well-balanced aquarium, a thin film of algae on the glass is perfectly normal. In fact, many aquarium inhabitants feed on it quite happily. Snails, Otocinclus, Amano shrimp and some Ancistrus species spend a good part of their day grazing on these microscopic algae.


The real issue is therefore not their presence, but their excessive growth.


If the glass quickly becomes covered with a thick green layer, or if algae gradually spread over plants and decorations, it is often a sign that one or more parameters should be checked: lighting duration, excess nutrients, a lack of fast-growing plants or an imbalance in the aquarium's biological system.


In the end, algae are not the "bad guys." They are simply the first organisms to take advantage of a change in the aquarium's balance.


What If Algae Aren't the Problem?

In the aquarium hobby, algae have a bad reputation. Yet they are often just the first visible sign that an aquarium is evolving.


Rather than automatically seeing them as enemies, they can also be viewed as indicators. They show us that a balance is being established... or that a parameter may need to be adjusted.


Ultimately, a beautiful aquarium is not one where algae have disappeared completely. It is one where they remain discreet, allowing plants, fish and decorations to thrive naturally.
